![]() Not surprising, though, since everyone hated it when it came out. As it is, it’s completely hollow on the inside. It was just painfully derivative and lackluster with an occasional brilliant bit (and I do guiltily admit to one particular victim attack in the final act as surprising) and impressive special effects that save it from being complete trash. I know some people think of this film as “so trashy it’s fun” especially since this is a Verhoven film, but that didn’t happen with me. It’s not even laughable-or at least for me. Memoirs of an Invisible Man wasn’t great, but it was something. Even John Carpenter managed to get something out of his efforts. There’s no real connection to the invisible man, as antagonistic as he is, and it comes off as just another horror flick. But these don’t serve the haphazard writing at all. Not to mention being a vague figure amidst fire extinguishing smoke. Barring the illogical feat of actually seeing (if your retinas are invisible, then light cannot hit them and you cannot see), there are things like disguising himself as a regular human by giving himself a rubber mask coating his face aside from his eye sockets and mouth. To be fair, he does play around with ways an invisible man could cope with being invisible. And the fact that it transforms into a slasher movie of all things in the final act is the real kicker here. Going around, startling everyone, rubbing his co-worker’s nipple, raping his neighbour, killing his government agent, seething with jealousy over his bimbo girlfriend getting it on with Jonah Hex, killing all his co-workers except those two… If anything here sounds interesting, that is completely dissipated by Verhoven who does absolutely nothing of interest with the material-and the material is so stupidly generic that it hurts to watch. Of course, since he’s invisible he wants to have a little fun. After testing an antidote on a gorilla that manages to work, one of the scientists, a smart but pathetic jerk played by Kevin Bacon, volunteers to take the invisibility serum to test how invisible humans could function. If you don’t know, the movie is about a group of scientists that come together to test invisibility serum on animals. How did he possibly create something hemorrhage-inducingly generic as Hollow Man? Which makes sense, since regardless of the qualities of his other movies they at least felt defined to something he could do. Not surprising that he regrets this film. Which is amazing given that a director with such a defined voice, Paul Thomas W S Anderson Verhoven, was at helm here. Aside from such minor gripes, the effects are pretty good especially for 2000.īut dear lord, this movie has no soul. If you wanted to emphasise the puppy’s brutal death there were better ways, possibly offscreen. ![]() Seriously, I know it’s simulated because he takes it off the screen for a split second. And so do scenes like him murdering the puppy. I do have gripes with things like how his body is deconstructed to show his insides as he becomes invisible-they do have effort put into it, sure (more than half of the film’s $90M budget was for the effects), but it still looks rather fake. The special effects are mostly solid and work best when the main character is invisible or even wet. (I am half-exaggerating, as this was one of those films promoted by fictitious critic David Manning.) They did create technology to use for their movies, after all. It’s as if Sony conned everyone into having everyone shell out $190M for a tech demo, not a movie. The only thing hollow here is the movie’s soul. If the man really was hollow, then he would just be a shell of a being with nothing inside. That title is factually incorrect, by the way.
